Poetry by Niyi Onamusi ( a genius on a private rampage)

Child of the Night

Dawn is what I dread

Dusk is where I tread

The Night comes when no man can work

Nay! The Night is where I see light

Free from the pointless interactions of fickle minds

I soar to the heights of possibilities

My potentialities assuming dynamism

What I conceive in the Night

I express in the light

For out of the darkness of the unknown

Proceeds the maturation of knowledge

(written as a response to incessant queries as per my nocturnal lifestyle)

Venus and Adonis

‘Had I no eyes but ears, my ears would love
That inward beauty and invisible;
Or were I deaf, thy outward parts would move
Each part in me that were but sensible:
Though neither eyes nor ears, to hear nor see,
Yet should I be in love by touching thee.

‘Say, that the sense of feeling were bereft me,
And that I could not see, nor hear, nor touch,
And nothing but the very smell were left me,
Yet would my love to thee be still as much;
For from the still ‘tory of thy face excelling
Comes breath perfumed that breedeth love by
smelling.

The Angel of Death

An amazement that goes beyond wonder

A story and enigma I cannot ponder

How that mortal man is torn asunder

A perfect dissociation of soul and body

I see death wearing different faces

Accidents, diseases, malfunctions with varied traces

Snuffing out the life from all the hollow gazes

To some a rendezvous of peace and bliss

The mystery of death I cannot explain

Seen so many deaths in my little life

The demise of lives we can’t reclaim

Souls sown to the wind with no gain

The process of death defies explanation

Death must be a messenger

The handwork of supreme intelligence

Much genius in the execution of its devices

Death is smart and cunning

A dastardly and elusive enigma

A riddle wrapped up in mystery

(written in the emergency pediatric unit of LUTH after six futile hours of trying to keep a neonate alive).
